UST Economics Department

Faculty Activities

Members of the Economics Department are professionally active internationally, nationally and within their community.

They have participated in faculty exchange programs and have taught in Australia, Canada, Ireland and Norway. We also receive the benefit of foreign scholars who spend a semester or year teaching here at the University of St. Thomas.

Economics faculty members have served as advisers and consultants to government agencies and private businesses, and have testified as experts in legal proceedings. They have been involved in shaping public policy concerning telecommunications, transportation, the environment and Equal Opportunity Employment.

Research interests among the faculty are diverse, covering such areas as tax policy, labor markets, environmental policy, economic development and foreign economic systems. Faculty research results in journal publications and in papers presented at international, national and regional conferences. Some conferences, such as those by the Minnesota Academy of Science and the Minnesota Economics Association, offer opportunities for student participation.

At St. Thomas, a faculty member's role also includes service to the community. Some speak to civic groups or to primary and secondary school audiences. Others engage in volunteer work with charitable organizations.

All of these activities suggst the variety of ways in which professors and students can make important societal contributions.
